Finding the One That Fits
The hardest part about finding the perfect dress is finding the perfect fit. At the Villager on Broadway we have a variety of styles to fit every body type, and we also offer alterations services to ensure that your gown looks like it was made for you. But, remembering that what looks good on someone else may not look good on you - and vice versa - is important. Here are guidelines to get you started.
Problem: I hate my huge hips!
DO IT: A full-skirted gown or a gown that draws focus upward.
NO WAY: Sheaths, draping bustles or fabrics, and v-necks. Anything that draws focus down the body should be a no.
Problem: Baby got back!
SHAKE IT: A strapless gown to draw attention upward or a draping bustle. Or flaunt it like J-Lo, just make sure to wear proper under garments.
BIG MISTAKE: Clingy materials, sheath designs, and mermaid-style dresses.
Problem: I am too thin!
FLAUNT IT: Sheaths, two-piece, and A-lines will accentuate your slimness. The thin and svelte can wear clingy materials and strappy gowns.
AVOID IT: Halters or strapless if your collarbone is too thin.
Problem: I don't exactly have Britney's abs...
TRY ON: Empire-waist gowns or corset-style two pieces to give you a longer slim look. Fancy waist-whittling tummy flatteners are available at any department store as well.
LEAVE IT ON THE RACK: Princess-cut gowns, basque waists, sheaths. Sashes and horizontal lines are also a big no-no.
Problem: My arms are too big!
GRAB IT: Short sleeves, off-the-shoulder necklines, and see through lace sleeves. Try a sweetheart neckline to show off your chest.
AVOID IT: Sleeveless, strapless, and spaghetti straps.
Remember these are just helpful hints! Most important is how you feel in the dress. Looking good is all about confidence, so choose a dress to fit your own style and accessorize to make it yours.
